· 8 min read

Discover the pivotal roles in SAFe that maximize the efficiency and performance of your agile teams.

Introduction

In the context of adopting the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) for portfolio and product management, it is crucial to identify and understand the key roles that contribute to the success of your agile initiatives. Three roles are particularly important: the Release Train Engineer (RTE), Product Management, and System Architect.

  • Release Train Engineer (RTE)
  • Product Management
  • System Architect

Release Train Engineer (RTE)

The RTE leads the Agile team and is responsible for the delivery of high-quality solutions. They work closely with Product Management to align goals, prioritize backlogs, and ensure that the teams can successfully deliver. The RTE plays a critical role in communication, problem-solving, and risk management.

Product Management

The Product Management role is to define and manage the product backlog, prioritize User Stories based on added value and strategic goals, and work closely with Agile teams to ensure that products are developed and deployed effectively. They are also responsible for defining and maintaining the product vision, and communicating with customers and stakeholders.

System Architect

The System Architect is responsible for the design and technical architecture of the solution. They ensure technical consistency across different Agile teams and guide the team in making critical technical decisions. They work closely with RTEs to ensure that solutions are scalable, reliable, and maintainable.
